Netflix Releases First Official Trailer for ‘Don’t Look Up’

Netflix today released the official teaser for its upcoming sci-fi black comedy film, Don’t Look Up. Paramount Pictures was initially set to distribute the movie before it was acquired by Netflix. Featuring an ensemble cast unlike any other, Don’t Look Up hits streaming in December.

The movie follows two astronomers, grad student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio). After discovering a comet on a collision course with Earth, they warn President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her son and Chief of Staff, Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill).

Thinking they’re the bearer of an information that can make or break humanity’s chances of survival, it turns out the higher ups have already heard lots of ‘the world is ending’ warnings that they’ve stopped caring. Intent on sending a warning to the public, Kate and Randall go on a press tour to save humanity.

Despite their pleas for everyone to listen, the urgency of the situation is only aggravated by the people’s refusal to care. Don’t Look Up may be a disaster film on the outside but it’s certainly a black comedy that addresses relevant issues today like social media and climate change.

Who stars in Don’t Look Up?

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice), Don’t Look Up is Netflix’s most star-studded movie to date. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Mark Rylance, and Tyler Perry star as the movie’s main cast.

Joining them are Rob Morgan (Daredevil), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Ariana Grande (Victorious), Scott Mescudi (We Are Who We Are), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), and Himesh Patel (Yesterday). Chris Evans and Matthew Perry will also appear in the film.

How to watch Don’t Look Up in Australia?

Don’t Look Up will premiere 24th December on Netflix at around 6 pm AEST. If you’re a Telstra customer, you can easily add Netflix to your account for the same monthly plan fee, which starts at $10.99 per month in Australia for the Basic subscription, $15.99 for Standard, and $19.99 for Premium.

How to Watch or Stream ‘Small Axe’ by Steve McQueen

From the director of 12 Years A Slave comes a special five-part anthology that consists of original movies set from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. Each film narrates a powerful story of London’s West Indian community, whose lives were shaped by the power of their will amidst immense racism and discrimination within the society.

Small Axe was initially conceived as a TV series but Steve McQueen felt that the stories were strong enough to stand alone as original films. The five films that comprise Small Axe include Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Red, White and Blue, Alex Wheatle, and Education.

According to Steve McQueen, “The anthology, anchored in the West Indian experience in London, is a celebration of all that that community has succeeded in achieving against the odds.” He also added saying, “Although all five films take place between the late 1960s and mid-80s, they are just as much a comment on the present as they were then… a commentary on where we were, where we are and where we want to go.”

The first film, Mangrove, was already shown at the London Film Festival. The story centres on the highly publicised trial against the ‘Mangrove Nine’ in 1970. It follows their wrongful arrest for starting a riot in a reign of racist terror. Mangrove premieres on BINGE come December 19.

After Mangrove, the rest of the four remaining films will drop one day after another. Lovers Rock on the 20th, Red, White and Blue on the 21st, Alex Wheatle on the 22nd, and Education on the 23rd.

Zac Efron Will Star in New Stan Original Film ‘Gold’ to be Filmed in South Australia

Zac Efron, who’s currently enjoying his newfound residence in Australia, has also signed up for a project with Stan, with production kicking off in South Australia this month. In addition to Efron, Stan Original Film ‘Gold’ will also feature award-winning actress Susie Porter (Ladies in Black, The Second) and AACTA Award-winning actor and filmmaker, Anthony Hayes (Animal Kingdom, War Machine), who will also direct the film based on the screenplay he co-wrote with Polly Smyth.

This marks Zac’s first project since arriving in Australia earlier this year. The announcement also comes hot on the heels after Stan recently revealed their plans of ramping up their slate of local and internationally produced Stan Original TV series and films. ‘Gold’ is among the latest original productions that have been giving the green light, which includes Eden, Bump, Dom and Adrian: 2020, After The Night, and A Sunburnt Christmas.

The movie’s plot is set against the backdrop of a vast, unique, and unforgiving landscape. It is mainly a thriller about greed and the lengths people will go to get their hands on a massive fortune. Two drifters travelling through the outback end up stumbling across the biggest gold nugget ever found, and their dream of immense wealth and greed instantly takes hold. They then hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty, leaving one man to secure the equipment needed, while the other remains on location and must endure the harsh desert climate, preying wolves and intruders — while also dealing with the creeping doubt that he has been abandoned to his own fate.

This is an exciting, gripping and timely tale about greed, humanity, who we are, what we’ve done to the world and where we are heading if we aren’t careful. To have Zac Efron as my main man on this film is an absolute gift and to see what he is creating already is like nothing we’ve seen from him before. I can’t wait to deliver this bold, visceral and cinematic film to audiences all around the world,” says co-writer and director Anthony Hayes.

The Stan Original Film ‘Gold’ will premiere on Stan and in cinemas in 2021. The film will be released in cinemas through Madman Entertainment with Altitude FIlms handling worldwide sales of the films.
