How to Watch ‘Sex Cult’ Doco-Series The Vow

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a modern-day sex cult founded in the late 90s that unraveled in recent years with the founder and his close associate arrested and indicted on federal charges for sex trafficking plus other crimes. This sex cult is better known as NXIVM (pronounced as ‘Nexium’), headed by Keith Raniere and is based in the suburbs of Albany, New York.

Due to the shocking revelations that unfolded thanks to a whistleblower, not to mention the many big names associated with it (including ‘Smallville’ actress Allison Mack), NXIVM was thrown into the forefront of it all making headlines in the news. With ‘The Vow,’ HBO is giving people a closer look at what really went behind closed doors in this self-proclaimed American multi-level marketing company.

This nine-part doco-series mainly features interviews of former members Mark Vicente, Sarah Edmondson, and Bonnie Piesse — all of whom were avid supporters and believers of Raniere before they came to the realisation that not all is right in this “company.” It’s an intriguing, shocking, and unnerving look at this sex cult as they begin with how it all started and how it all came crashing down as revelations just kept getting worse and worse.

HBO has renewed The Vow for a second season, which is said to focus on Raniere’s trial, sentencing, and a more in-depth look at his inner circle and supporters. NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman and ongoing NXIVM supporter Nikki Clyne will appear in the second season, alongside federal prosecutor Moira Kim Penza.
