As if this year couldn’t bring any more bad news, it seems like Netflix’s sleeper hit thriller show “Mindhunter” could may as well be over — at least, for now.
Last January, the actors of the show were released from their contracts, which signaled a delay before a third season could even begin with production. And now, co-showrunner David Fincher himself admitted that the much-awaited third season is now very unlikely to happen.
In an interview with Vulture, Fincher said that “for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.” The original plan was for Fincher to finish filming his new movie, Mank, which stars Gary Oldman as Citizen Kane writer Herman J. Mankiewicz, and then see how he feels about continuing on with Mindhunter.
So is it really over for Mindhunter and its true crime-obsessed legion of fans? Maybe, and maybe not. There remains a sliver of hope given that Netflix has not officially canceled the show just yet — but if and when it’s going to return or not is something that we all have to wait and see. In the meantime, the first 2 seasons of Mindhunter are still available for rewatching and re-binge-ing on Netflix.
